Glory Be Prayer Versions
Understanding why believers encounter slight differences in translation between traditional devotion and official liturgical books.
Filipino Canonical (Luwalhati sa Ama)
Luwalhati sa Ama, at sa Anak, at sa Espiritu Santo,
kapara noong unang-una, ngayon at magpakailanman,
at magpasawalang hanggan. Amen.
Liturgical Context: Dinarasal sa buong Pilipinas sa pagtatapos ng bawat dekada ng Santo Rosaryo at sa pananalangin ng Sambayanang Kristiyano.
Textual Notes: "Magpasawalang hanggan" ay salin ng Latin na "in saecula saeculorum" (sa mga siglong walang katapusan).
Traditional English
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
Liturgical Context: Standard Catholic devotion, the Holy Rosary, traditional prayer books, and common English Christian usage.
Textual Notes: The phrase "world without end" translates the Latin "in saecula saeculorum" (unto the ages of ages).
Contemporary Liturgical (ICEL)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Liturgical Context: The official English translation approved for the Roman Rite Divine Office by the Holy See and ICEL.
Textual Notes: Renders "in saecula saeculorum" as "will be for ever" to provide a direct contemporary cadence in choral psalmody.
Canonical Latin (Gloria Patri)
Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto,
sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper,
et in saécula saeculórum. Amen.
Liturgical Context: Universal liturgical formulation of the Roman Catholic Church, used in the Latin Mass and Gregorian chant.
Textual Notes: The root Latin text from which all Western liturgical translations originate.
Spanish Canonical (Gloria al Padre)
Gloria al Padre, y al Hijo, y al Espíritu Santo,
como era en el principio, ahora y siempre,
por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.
Liturgical Context: Rezado en todo el mundo hispanohablante en el Santo Rosario y la Liturgia de las Horas.
Textual Notes: "Por los siglos de los siglos" matches the literal Latin "in saecula saeculorum".
