Prayer for the Faithful Departed (Eternal Rest)

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Amen.

Rooted in early Christian liturgy and the Catholic belief in the Communion of Saints and Purgatory, this prayer intercedes for souls who have departed this earthly life.

The Lord’s Prayer (Our Father)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer is the summary of the whole Gospel, given by Christ Himself. In seven petitions, it praises God the Father, desires the coming of His kingdom, asks for daily spiritual and bodily sustenance, and begs for forgiveness and deliverance from evil.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;

blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Rooted in the Gospel of Saint Luke (Luke 1:28, 42), the Hail Mary honors the Mother of God and asks for her maternal prayers for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Canonical English doxology prayer text used in liturgical and private devotion across the United States.
